USCIS makes case-by-case decisions for off-campus employment for students who can show that new, unexpected circumstances beyond their control have created severe economic hardship. Regulation that defines off-campus employment for F-1 students is in 8 CFR 214.2 (f)(9)(ii). This will allow the DSO to ensure that the new position qualifies as on-campus employment and to ensure the DSO has the correct employment information in the student’s SEVIS record.
